FAKE GEEK GUYS: A MESSAGE TO MEN ABOUT SEXUAL HARASSMENT
By Andy Khouri
“I think this woman is wrong about something on the Internet. Clearly my best course of action is to threaten her with rape.”
That’s crazy talk, right? So why does it happen all the time?
Honest question, dudes.
That women are harassed online is not news. That women in comics and the broader fandom cultures are harassed online is not news. That these women are routinely transmitted anonymous messages describing graphic sexual violence perpetrated upon them for transgressions as grave as not liking a thing… that is actually news to me, and it’s probably news to a lot of you guys reading this.
So what do we do about it?
This article explains the solution perfectly and it’s sad how painfully obvious it is.
It’s all on the men in the comic industry, in any entertainment industry, to fix this sexist bullshit. It’s not the job of women to stop men from acting like sexist assholes, it’s the men’s job to point out other men who spout hate, abuse and rape threats and call them out on their bullshit.
This article pretty much does the job and makes the points the previous ones (by Janelle Asselin) tried to before they got lost in all of the author’s body-shaming and inherent transphobia. I’m glad someone got it right and I’m glad someone brought up the point that it’s not just on women to fix sexism. And sometimes, women need to fix sexism within themselves too, I might add. :/
